Saronic Islands, Argolic Gulf and Eastern Peloponnese, Greece
At close proximity to Athens, you will find the Saronic Islands, Argolic Gulf and the eastern coastline of the Peloponnese, all of which are places of great historical significance in Greece.
On the eastern coastline of the Peloponnese there are many secluded harbours and anchorages, as well as the historical towns of Mycenae, Epidaurus and Nafplion. The islands of Angistri, Aegina, Poros, Salamina, Spetses, Hydra and Methana are the most popular destinations for sailboats and yachts in Greece. This route is considered an amazing sailing experience.
The non-tide waters of the Mediterranean Sea, a magnetic variation of just over 2° (2° 05' E 1990), enhance your sailing experience, but you should beware of the navigation hazards in the region.
Climate information for sailing in the Saronic Islands, Greece
In the summer, heat haze can reduce visibility to a mile or two, but rain cleanses the air, greatly improving it. While sailing from Athens, it is impossible to identify features until you have reached approximately 3 miles. While sailing towards Athens, you should pay attention to the smog and to the light morning radiation fog that dies out at night.
In the Saronic Gulf region, be careful of the rocks, which are easy to spot due to the clarity of the waters. Beware when sailing close to fishing boats and avoid getting the propeller of your yacht caught in nets. At night, navigation out of the usual routes should be avoided unless you are familiar with the region.
Sea Water Signals
- Deep blue water: good
- Deep green water: getting shallow
- Lighter green water: beware
- Brown water: species of molluscs can be identified.
