Sailing in the Cyclades Islands, Greece
The Cyclades Islands are situated in the middle of the Aegean Sea, which took its name from King Aegeas, who threw himself in the sea when he believed that his son, Theseas, had been killed.
The Cyclades Islands form an imaginary circle around the island of Delos, which was a center of worship and trade in Ancient Greece. The Cyclades were named after their position around Delos, as Cyclos (is the Greek word for the "circle").
The Cyclades Islands cluster is comprised of 56 islands, islets and skerries. The most popular and inhabited islands are divided into the following sub-clusters:
- Northern Cyclades: Kea, Kythnos, Syros, Andros, Tinos, Mykonos, Delos and Rinia.
- Middle Cyclades: Serifos, Sifnos, Paros, Antiparos, Naxos, Donoussa, Iraklia, Schinoussa, Koufonissia, Amorgos and Levitha.
- Southern Cyclades: Milos, Kimolos, Folegandros, Sikinos, Ios, Santorini ( Thira) and Anafi.
